Instructions: Read the following information about Multiculturalism in the US:
Multiculturalism is not clearly established in the United States policy at the federal level, nevertheless ethnic diversity is common in both urban and rural areas.
Continuous mass immigration has been a feature of the US society and economy since the first half of the 19th century. The absorption of the stream of immigrants became, in itself, a prominent feature of the US’s national myth.
There is an idea of a melting pot (a metaphor) that implies that all the immigrant cultures are mixed and amalgamated without state intervention. The melting pot theory also implied that each individual immigrant, and each group of immigrants, assimilated into American society at their own pace. This is different than multiculturalism as its general definition does not include complete assimilation and integration.
The melting pot tradition co-exists with a belief in national unity dating from the American founding fathers.
